The first thing that will probably capture your liking for this dog, at first sight, will be its adorable brown colored almond-shaped eyes and its graceful massive appearance.
The Alaskan Malamute is also loved greatly and desired because of its power, strength, and endurance. Let’s travel down and find out more reasons to love this wolf-looking dog, though dreadfully looking but has the warmest personality in a dog.
History
How did they find their way around here? From the nomadic tribe of Mahlemut in northwestern Alaskan came a sled dog used for pulling carts in farm fields at low speeds and hunting. The harmonic interdependent relationship of the Mahlemut and their treasured dogs made a way for them to survive fairly around the Arctic circle.
In 1896 at the time of the Klondike Gold Rush, the malamute and some other dogs become highly desired because they were very helpful to their owners. This gave rise to the decision to crossbreed them with others special and foreign breed from in by some of the settlers.
During the second world war, the malamute was very useful as a search and rescue dog, acted as a pack animal and helped greatly in the dispatch of mails. Around 1935, the American Kennel Club welcomed the breed and since then, it has been on a steady rise in popularity as a faithful dog companion, and incredible dog for shows.
Temperament
Alaskan malamute as gathered from its ancestry is an intelligent home dog, the kind that will love to sleep at your foot and follow you from one room to another. An independent dog he is, head-strong and very powerful, may not be a very nice choice for first-time owners.
And they can sometimes be hostile against unfamiliar dogs, livestock, and other pets in the house, which also means having it share a home with a cat or other animals may be disastrous. The dog tends greatly towards a domineering attitude and can be hard to housebreak.
But this cute fierceness is a social bee with people and its family members, they are a breed that is never embarrassed with a large appetite so when you have them plan for more food time if you wish to have a happy dog. They are also happy dogs both in the house and outside, they are one of the most well-mannered dogs and you can’t get enough of it.
Environment
This dog breed is not a very good choice for apartments unless you will provide a daily means of engagement for it but if you have a large backyard, best for your pet. And having a high fence is important when you don’t want to deal with your dog straying off or digging its way out to view the world.
The Alaskan malamute are in constant need for activities or they may get a little distressed and when they are bored, they are often irritable and destructive. So, you see, regular engagement is necessary for good mental stimulation and in ensuring your pet stays agile and happy always.
Exercise
Giving the Alaskan malamutes good portions of exercises is very important to its well being so when you are out of ideas on how to keep it vibrant, go for long walks, go jogging with it every morning but you may reduce the amounts of exercise during the dry season.
Another way of letting your dog exercise to its heart content is to let it run freely around the yard once or twice every day. hiking and swimming are other ways your buddy can let off steam and stay exhilarated.
Grooming
Your thickly-coated Alaskan malamute needs a lot of grooming to stay pleasant-looking all year round. Its double-coated hair needs to be combed and brushed daily with a metal comb or a brush to give no place for mat formation and the undercoat raked every shedding season.
If your malamute is a show dog you will have to give it a bath weekly but if they are pets at home, they can stay up to six weeks before the next shower. Sometimes their coat may feel a little coarse, so, it is advised to use a little of the conditioner in this case to reduce the dryness. Trimming of its nails is also a good grooming practice as well as checking the ears to clear foreign matter and wax and regular brushing of the teeth.
