History

First off, ‘Spaniel’ is Spanish for ‘Spanish Dog’, hence the cocker spaniel is believed to be a descendant of the Spaniel family. This elite dog family was split into the 1800s and spaniels from then off could either be companions or hunting dogs.

These hunting dogs were further split based on terrain, hence the creation of water spaniels and land spaniels. Now, the Cocker Spaniel belonged to the land spaniels.

Their name had even originated due to the breed’s woodcock hunting skills. However, a lot of years went by and more people grew to love the purebred, some even used them as show dogs. the Cocker Spaniel was finally AKC recognized in 1946.

Temperament

If you’re looking for an aggressive watchdog, the cocker spaniel isn’t the right pick for you. This breed is very sweet, affectionate and calm. Cocker spaniels are also very playful and they enjoy different activities.

They are incredibly sensitive and are born cuddly, hence they will not thrive in harsh conditions or treatments. However, early socialization is needed for this breed so as to be aware of all the elements in his surroundings.

They are smart breeds and are always alert too. All you need is to train him early while being sensitive to his sensitivities and you’ll have yourself a great Cocker Spaniel.

Environment

As earlier stated, Cocker Spaniels cannot thrive in an environment of abuse or harsh treatments on it. Being of farmland descent, this dog breed adapts really well to apartment living. They can handle both cold and hot weather extremities without a fuss.

However, if you live close to a park or if you have a yard, do take them out to it and only remove the leash when he’s in a controlled environment as cocker spaniels have a high potential for wanderlust.

Exercise

Cocker spaniels do not have an overly large appetite for exercise. They prefer cuddling up with their humans. However, a walk to the park or a casual run can be fine for this breed, nothing too intensive.

Their playfulness makes peaks their energy levels hence you may need to play with them a while. It’s important to add that your cocker spaniel will chase after small prey as their prey drive is very high because of their hunting dog heritage.

However, cocker spaniels are easy to train hence exercise shouldn’t be a problem.

Grooming

Cocker spaniels are known to be fairly draining to groom. However, most owners indulge the services of a professional when the need arises. Grooming a cocker spaniel is fairly expensive but the great news is that it’s only needed every 6-8 weeks.

The price is high because a lot of time is invested into the bathing, brushing, and trimming of the breed’s fur alongside nail trimming. However, owners can brush daily to keep the fur tangle-free.

The cocker spaniel is cute and its fur contributes most of its endearing looks, hence, if you’re more of a frugal owner then this breed isn’t for you.
